2024 BMW i5 Unveiled in Malaysia at PACE G60 5 Series EV Shines with eDrive40, 340 HP, and a Range of 582 km, Priced at RM420k

06-Nov-2023

In Malaysia, the BMW i5 has now been formally introduced. The G60 5 Series generation, which will also feature plug-in hybrids and somewhat hybrid internal combustion engines, will likely be introduced here in the upcoming year, but the complete EV launch comes first. The i5 eDrive40, which debuted at PACE 2023, is one of two BEV G60s that are available worldwide; the other is the i5 M60 xDrive, which will be released later.

Without insurance, the CBU-imported i5 eDrive40 M Sport is being sold for RM419,800 on the open market. Roadside support, an eight-year or 160,000 km battery guarantee, and a five-year unlimited mileage warranty with free periodic service program are all included in the RRP. It starts at RM399,500 without the optional extended warranty package. With the Easy Drive Financing Plan, monthly installments start at RM4,677.

Come check out the BMW i5 this weekend at PACE at the Setia City Convention Centre.

A single rear-mounted motor with 313 PS and 400 Nm of torque powers the i5 eDrive40. It has a maximum power output of 340 PS/430 Nm when My Mode Sport and Sport Boost/Launch Control are activated, and it can reach 100 km/h in 6.0 seconds. The maximum speed is 193 km/h, and renowned composer Hans Zimmer has created a variety of iconic sounds for you to select from.

The standard i5's WLTP range is up to 582 kilometers when using an 83.9 kWh battery in the floor pan. With the new Max Range function, you can extend your range when your battery is running low by up to 25% by restricting power and speed (up to 90 km/h) and turning off comfort features. Eight hours and fifteen minutes are needed for 0-100% AC wallbox charging, however 34 minutes are needed for DC fast charging (maximum rate of 205 kW) from 10 to 80% SOC.

Being "just a 5 Series" is a great thing, as we discovered while driving the i5. This was discovered in September. This is an enjoyable electric vehicle to drive, with controls that seem "just right" and comfort and dynamics that match those of a new 5 Series. Add the newest technology and a luxurious, roomy cabin (that's closer to the 7) and you have a fantastic all-arounder. Here is our complete evaluation.

The G60 appears large, and it is, in every way. It is a distinct three-box sedan that is now more than five meters long (5,060 mm +97 mm) and 1.9 meters wide (1.9 meters + 32 mm), with an overall height increase of 36 mm to 1,515 mm. There is a 20 mm increase in wheelbase (2,995). There is no EV tradeoff because the i5 was always intended to be a part of the G60 strategy, and the boot space is a roomy 490 liters.

There are still aspects of the G60 to get used to, but one of BMW's two main models does not have an i7-style massive grille because the company cannot afford to produce the 5 polarizing. The newest 5er forgoes soft curves and surfacing in favor of a more organic flow similar to the F10 and G30. This "reduced" design language is most seen on the sides, where the door panels are flat and the handles are flush.

The black-painted section between the wheels tries to visually counteract the sides' relative height (the G30's "hockey stick" vent has been removed). Although there is a "5" emblem at the back of the daylight aperture, the most noticeable modifications are the straight tail lamps, which resemble those of an X5 and are no longer "L" shaped, and the valley beneath the BMW emblem on the bonnet. There's also the kidney grille's characteristic "Iconic Glow" shape, i7-style.

Since we're not usually into the "luxury look" for our premium automobiles, Malaysia will naturally receive the i5 eDrive40 in M Sport configuration. Sportier end bumpers and an abundance of gloss black trim are features of the M Sport. Want to see the G60's standard, non-M Sport version's appearance? This is our complete live gallery. Identical to the rims shown in official launch photos, our car is equipped with enormous 21-inch BMW Individual aerodynamic 954 wheels in two-tone, with staggered tires.

Adaptive LED headlamps, Adaptive Suspension Pro, and Integral Active Steering (four-wheel steering) are some of the significant components of the remaining driving equipment.

The i5, which is equipped with the most recent version of the BMW Operating System (8.5), has an abundance of technology. Taking full advantage of the tax-free window for CBU EVs, the i5 eDrive40 is equipped with a stunning BMW Interaction Bar, a 12.3-inch instrument panel with a 14.9-inch touchscreen display, an interior camera mounted in the roof (viewable via the My BMW app), and a panoramic glass roof for both enjoyment and security.

The latter is a crystal-like trim that is softly lit and was initially seen on the i7 limousine. The colors shift in response to controls, and the red and blue combination in the M-style is extremely good. The 'Aluminum Rhombicle' trim and polished glass crystal parts match the stylish bar.

A Bowers & Wilkins Surround Sound System with 18 speakers and 655 watts of power provides the audio. Above the Harman Kardon system that some may have anticipated, this is the model's highest-end option. BMW Malaysia opted for Black and Copper Brown Leather Merino upholstery over the non-cow Veganza leather that is now offered for the G60.

Proactive Care, a brand-new customer support platform incorporated within the i5, is something fresh. Condition-Based Service (CBS), Accident Assistance (A-Call), Live Diagnosis, and Digital Tyre Diagnosis are all included with PC. The technology will inform the driver and direct them to the closest dealership if immediate servicing is needed while they are driving.

Lastly, Max Performance Charging is new to BMW's EVs and was not addressed in the press release. MPC, which has nothing to do with maximum charging rate, smoothes out the previously stepped charging power decline (the usual pattern is to shoot up to maximum upon plug-in before falling gradually), as seen in the iX. It is appropriate to begin charging at full power even at higher SOCs than when the battery is almost empty.

These qualities facilitate faster absorption of more juice. Although the design of the i5 is 400V, BMW claims that with MPC, charging performance surpasses that of competitors using 400V and approaches 800V levels.

Phytonic Blue Metallic, Brooklyn Grey Metallic, Mineral White Metallic, and Black Sapphire Metallic are the final color possibilities. Once more, the duty-exempted BMW i5 eDrive40 comes with a complete five-year warranty and service package, and is priced RM419,800 on the road without insurance.
